Peace and conflict
Our new peace and conflict program has received much positive response from the students. Rajesh Khumar from Purbanchal University in Nepal has written about his experience from taking part in the program during the autumn semster 2006:.
Tucked away in a far corner of southern India, Pondicherry is probably known for French Colonization, breath taking scenery and the combination of cross cultures, reflecting various structural communities and religious establishments. It is a very suitable place for the students participating in Peace and Conflict studies. Overall, I am very impressed with this course. It is worthy of a special international recognition and I feel proud to be a pioneer student of Peace and Conflict studies. It is the first time the course is offered this semester and I am thankful to Kulturstudier for offering 10 weeks Program in Pondicherry India.

The course has clearly stated and comprehensive learning goals, a rationally constructed sequence of topics, and uses diverse and detailed learning resources and materials. Learner interaction activities as well as assessment measures, including essays have been thoughtfully planned and clearly designed. The manner in which the specialists have written the course material indicates that they are serious about students achieving the course outcomes. The assessments and essays are aligned with the course activities. The pre- and post-essays are a great idea, and the lectures, discussions and the seminars support the learning objectives of the course.
I am grateful that Kulturstudier selected such a fantastic venue for the study centre. The small island, green sheds of coconuts, typical huts, green sea and the flow of rivers create a fantastic rhythm for positive and inner peace and is a great environment!
The team leader, Mr. Kristoffer Lidén is approachable, open and available at all times. He constantly encourages us and praises the students’ work. Timelines for communication and due dates are obvious. I must thank Prof. C. Webel, Prof. Stig Toft Madsen and Prof. Oliver Richmond whose constant effort will help the students understand the issues in Peace and Conflict Studies, Approaches to Peace and the histories, The origins of the South Asian Conflicts and Conflict Resolution. The employees at the study centre who work around the clock, devoted to caring for the students and their requirement and providing the best possible study environment, overwhelm me. They do a great job! I must appreciate the field manager Mr. Selvaraj for his constant approach, qualifications and leadership. He provides comfort to the students in various ways and means and engages them to tours, yoga, dance classes and the occasional party.

It is a great experience participating in the first batch of Peace and Conflict Studies run by Kulturstudier and a great addition to my career as a Deputy Dean at Purbanchal University of Nepal. I shall use the valuable knowledge gained through the course and Norwegian friends to contribute to aid the development of my country Nepal, which has been severely affected and damaged by civil wars over the past ten years.
Kudos for excellent course!
Regards, Rajesh
